Red Sox will start Sale on Sunday if they need to clinch

If the Red Sox haven't clinched the American League East by Sunday, Chris Sale will indeed start.

The Red Sox need one win or a Yankees loss in order to secure the AL East, but that task has proven elusive over the last few days.

The Red Sox had hoped to provide Sale with extra rest, but given the tight situation with the division, they've opted to start their ace on Sunday.

If Boston does clinch on Saturday, however, Sale will not pitch Sunday.

The lefty started pitched on Tuesday against Toronto when he allowed five runs over five innings. He remains six strikeouts shy of breaking Pedro Martinez's single-season franchise strikeout record of 313.
