Chris Sale on Game 1: 'It's what I'm here for'

If the Red Sox lost Saturday, Chris Sale is pitching Sunday.

What would that have meant?

First of all, needing the ace to turn in one more regular season start would have been because the Red Sox' postseason existence was still in a state flux. It would have also pushed Sale back to Game 2 of the American League Division Series, while giving Houston a good look at a pitcher who hadn't faced the Astros since July 2, 2016.

But the Red Sox did win. And now Sale can take four days off before gearing up for that Game 1 start in Houston.

"It's what I'm here for," he said when asked about kicking off the ALDS for the Red Sox.

Sale has faced Houston six times in his career, going 5-1 with 1.31 ERA, striking out 65 and walking five. Prior to his most recent start against the Astros, he had allowed three earned runs in 41 innings. That last time out, however, he ran into a bit of trouble, giving up five runs over seven frames.

But Sale understands this is a whole new ballgame. He has never pitched in the postseason, and the prospects of finally doing so was certainly on his mind while getting showered in beer and champagne Saturday.
