Ruben Amaro on Tigers radar for manager opening

Ruben Amaro, the former Philadelphia Phillies GM whos been Bostons first-base coach the last two years, is on the Detroit Tigers list of managerial candidates, sources say.

This would be a somewhat unusual hired, but its an interesting choice. People close to Amaro say hes been very much interested in managing, and he certainly has had an interesting background, which includes a Stanford education, a career as a player and the longtime stay in the Phillies front office.

Amaro was recently linked to the Phillies managerial job, but several reports out of Philly shot that down. That might be a tough one since he just left Philadelphia two years ago after being dismissed as GM, and while he was in the front office during their heyday and for the 2008 World Series title, the team had mixed results while he was GM.

Amaro has won widespread praise for his work as Red Sox coach the past couple years, and for his willingness to take a job seen as quite a bit lower than GM in the hierarchy. He is known as a hard worker, and he certainly knows how the front office works, which has been beneficial for Craig Counsell and other MLB managers that spent time in the front office.
